Special education refers to providing education to children or persons with special needs by referring and making learning adjustments that would suite the special learners learning capability. Special educators would in an ideal situation make plans for each learner individually since special education does not operate like conventional education methods and each learner must be planned for individually.
There are different forms of special education and some common forms of disability that require special education intervention are: challenges in learning, communication and speech disorders, emotional and behavioral disorders, physical disability, and developmental disorders. Students or adults with these special needs will most likely require being provided special education techniques which involve different teaching methods that re-enforce teaching methods and techniques which must be adopted for each different student depending on his interests.
Intellectual learning capabilities are different in each different student and as many teachers consider these students to be foolish or dumb the fact is that they have a slower intellectual level or maybe the student is a visual or auditory learner. Whatever the case may be these students must receive specialized help towards making them understand how to solve these problems. Re-enforced teaching is a method that has been adopted and developed by special educators around the world, this method involves using re-enforces to maintain each Childs concentration level or maintain his interest towards learning a operation in exchange of the re-enforced. As mentioned above each student has his own form of re-enforced such as: snacks like chips or biscuits, toys, games, etc.
Identifying an experienced special educator
Educator should be calm and offer a smile as well as be firm on each student since special children have a tendency to take advantage of an educator who does not maintain strictness or firmness. The educator must avoid getting attached to the student and remember his objective is to improve the students conceptual understanding of what is being thought.
It will take a week for both student and teacher to break a balance, during this time the special educator should have identified the student’s re-enforcer i.e. what the child likes as a reward during the lesson. Identifying a re-enforcer or two is critical for each child’s learning as well as educator and student bonding. The educator should offer the re-enforcers when the student performs an operation independently, at first for just attempting and later making it more difficult as they progress with learning.
There are any different approaches that can be implemented but each approach will depend on the student with hyperactive proving to be more challenging and requiring more re-enforcers than physically disabled learners who prefer different re-enforcers such are story telling or reading of their favorites books in-between teaching sessions.
Possessing these qualities in special education is key to succeeding with students with learning difficulties as most of the learners are already fed up with conventional teaching methods and will defy conventional teaching methods, for this reason special educators must be versatile and ready to change or adapt to each students requirement with the sole aim of making sure the student benefits by learning what conventional teaching methods are unable to achieve.
